Apprentice training in the motor industry

Barloworld Motor Retail Academy addresses the motor retail industry’s skills shortage by offering the following merSETA accredited apprentice training for both Barloworld Motor Retail staff and external companies:
a. Apprentice motor mechanic training – Competency Based Modular Training
b. Diesel mechanic – Time-based but following Competency Based Modular Training (CBMT) curriculum.

 

a) Motor mechanic – Competency based modular training (CBMT) curriculum for the training conducted of apprentice Motor Mechanics consists of:

Level 1

1. Orientation to competency based training
2. Safety and first-aid knowledge in the workshop
3. Identify lubricants, materials and metals
4. Care and use of tools applicable to Motor Mechanic’s trade
5. Identify locking devises
6. Identify and fit gaskets and seals
7. Apply basic hand skills
8. Identify motor vehicle components
9. Understand the fundamentals of lubrication
10. Understand basic electricity
11. Use lifting equipment
12. Perform service to a motor vehicle

Level 2

  1. Study the fundamentals of technology
  2. Identify bushes and bearings and remove and inspect and replace bearings
  3. Service motor vehicle complete
  4. Identify, remove, diagnose and replace fuel system components (Carburettor systems)
  5. Identify exhaust systems
  6. Remove, inspect and replace cooling systems components
  7. Remove and replace lubrication system components
  8. Remove and replace suspension components
  9. Understanding the fundamentals of steering and wheel components
  10. Fuse materials

 

Level 3

  1. Special tools and remove, recondition and replace cylinder head
  2. Dismantle, service, repair and assemble the engine block and its main components
  3. Understand, remove, diagnose and replace fuel system components
  4. Understand basic electronics
  5. Test ignition systems components
  6. Study the fundamentals of engine efficiency and forced charging systems
  7. Remove, test, repair and replace electrical components
  8. Remove and replace clutch and transmission components
  9. Diagnose faults and repair brake systems and components

 

Level 4

  1. Diagnose, remove, inspect and replace advanced transmission systems
  2. Identify, test and repair advanced mechanical electronic systems
  3. Understand advanced electronic ignition system
  4. Understand, diagnose, remove, replace and commission air conditioner systems
  5. Identify and understand advanced high-speed diesel engines
  6. Remove and replace diesel fuel injectors and pump, service filters and diagnose engine performance.

 

 

b) Diesel apprentice training.The training conducted for apprentice Diesel Mechanics consists of:

Level 1

  1. Orientation to competency based training
  2. Safety and first-aid knowledge in the workshop
  3. Identify lubricants, materials and metals
  4. Care and use of tools applicable to Diesel Mechanic’s trade
  5. Identify locking devices
  6. Identify and fit gaskets and seals
  7. Apply basic hand skills
  8. Identify heavy duty vehicle components
  9. Understanding the fundamentals of lubrication
  10. Understanding basic electricity
  11. Use lifting equipment
  12. Perform minor service to a heavy duty vehicle
  13. Fuse metals

Level 2

  1. Understanding the fundamentals of heavy duty vehicle technology
  2. Identify bushes and bearings and remove and inspect and replace bearings
  3. Remove and replace a heavy duty vehicle engine and sub-system
  4. Remove and replace HDV transmission and drive train components
  5. Remove and replace HDV low pressure fuel system components
  6. Remove, assess and replace HDV exhaust systems
  7. Remove, assess and replace HDV cooling system components
  8. Remove and replace HDV suspension and steering systems
  9. Understand and perform wheel balancing and alignment on HDV
  10. Understanding and test HDV starting system components
  11. Understand, test and repair HDV electrical components
  12. Understand the fundamentals of HDV brake systems

Level 3

  1. Remove, assess recondition and replace HDV cylinder head
  2. Disassemble, recondition, assemble the engine block & its main components
  3. Understand, assess, repair & assemble HDV fuel injection components
  4. Understand basic electronics
  5. Understand, assess & service a HDV turbo charging system
  6. Assess and repair HDV brake system and components and diagnose faults
  7. Assess & repair steering and suspension systems

Level 4

  1. Understand specialized fuel injection systems & diagnose & rectify faults on HDV engines
  2. Understand operation, diagnose & repair HDV transmissions
  3. Diagnose faults on HDV steering & suspension systems
  4. Understand, assess & repair drive line components
  5. Identify, understand & repair HDV auxiliary & engine management systems
